According to the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine, "You Were a Kindness" is the next single to be released by The National, even though it was not featured on their 2010 album release, High Violet.

"This gloomy piano track pulls you so deep into the fog of a bad breakup that you'll want to call one of your exes and apologise for everything." Indeed, it's easy to visualise baritone Matt Berninger reaching for his phone and, accompanied by bar piano, singing into his beer glass, "You made a slow disaster out of me... Why would you shatter somebody like me?"

In August, The National unveiled this haunting new track “You Were a Kindness” on Minnesota Public Radio’s “The Current.” (Click here to listen.)

Formed in 1999, the Ohio-raised, Brooklyn-based band consists of vocalist Matt Berninger fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers preceded their signing to Beggars Banquet in 2004. Alligator (2005), included underground anthem “Mr. November” and raised their profile. Boxer (2007), featuring songs like “Fake Empire”, “Brainy”, "Mistaken for Strangers" and “Slow Show,” sold over three times as many copies as its predecessor and saw them transformed from underground stars into an indie rock institution. By the time their busy season in support of Boxer came to a close, they had become a headline attraction in their own right - the Barack Obama campaign turned “Fake Empire” into an unstated anthem for his presidential run, using it in the soundtrack to his promotional video and as background music during his victory rally.

As the first decade of the 21st century came to a close both Boxer and Alligator made countless “album of the decade” lists.

The music for High Violet was recorded in the band’s new studio behind Aaron’s old Victorian house. “After all the touring for Boxer, nobody wanted to dive back in to being in a band right away," says Matt. "It took a while to get my brain cooking. My wife and I had a baby girl at the beginning of 2009, so I unplugged from music and focused on family a little. Then gradually I’d walk around writing cornerstones of lyrics. It was a drip-by-drip, trickle-through process.”

“We started out trying to make a light and happy record, but it just didn't happen,” says Matt. The album included the single, "Bloodbuzz Ohio".

A personal, confessional element is intrinsic to Matt’s lyricism. "Somehow we create our own little world, and it works, even though sometimes it shouldn’t. Making something heartfelt is our only concern.”

The National start their tour of North America in Vancouver on Thursday before embarking on a winter tour of Europe and Australia in November.
