R.E.M. Collapse Into Now with GuestsR.E.M.'s fifteenth studio album Collapse Into Now features vocals by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, American singer-songwriter Patti Smith, and Canadian-born electronic musician Peaches.

In October, R.E.M.'s manager Bertis Downs told BBC Radio 6 Music that the band's new album will be called Collapse Into Now. Yesterday, multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills revealed on SPIN that the new album, due to be released early next year, has a more "expansive" sound than 2008's Accelerate and includes some special guests.

The twelve-track release is produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee, who produced Accelerate and whose credits also include studio albums for Snow Patrol, U2, Block Party, Weezer, and Editors. The album includes "All the Best," "Walk It Back," and the record's closing song "Blue," which features vocals from Patti Smith. The band has yet to announce a full tracklisting. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder sings on "It Happened Today," and Peaches is the vocalist on a track which has the word "alligator" in its title and features guitarist Lenny Kaye, best known as a member of the Patti Smith Group.

"With Accelerate we were trying to make a point by making the songs as short and as fast as possible," Mills told SPIN. "So we wanted this new one to be more expansive. We wanted to put more variety into it and not limit ourselves to any one type of song. There are some really slow, beautiful songs; there are some nice, mid-tempo ones; and then there are three or four rockers."

Mills added that while Accelerate's lyrics were politically-inspired, Collapse Into Now is a "very personal, very human record. Not only to [vocalist] Michael [Stipe], but personal and human in the sense of the narrative of the songs, the protagonists of the songs."

"Walk It Back," was written during studio sessions in New Orleans. "It's also fun for us to go to the cities we really love and spend some time," said Mills. Between breaks to write and rewrite songs, R.E.M. held recording sessions in Berlin, Nashville, and New Orleans.

After a day's work in the studio, the band went out to dinner. "It's really important to go out, get great food, shrug off the debris of the day, and just be friends and have a good time. In Berlin you drink beer and eat wurst. In New Orleans you eat Cajun food and drink Sazerac. In Nashville we ate a lot of fried chicken."

R.E.M. is an alternative rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. The band currently consists of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar and mandolin), and Mike Mills (bass, keyboards, and vocals). “R.E.M.” stands for “Rapid Eye Movement.”

Damon Albarn has revealed that the new Gorillaz album available as a "free" download* on Christmas Day will be called The Fall. Albarn revealed the title of the album during an interview with Sydney, Australia radio station Triple J.

The album was recorded in hotel rooms on Albarn’s iPad during the Gorillaz tour of the US in October. "I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," Albarn said in November.

The new record is named after the autumn season in which it was written. "I wrote it in October," he explained. "I didn't want to call it October because U2 had already used that. Although I like the word October, I like the month, I like the feeling."

Albarn will make a video of a track from The Fall available through an advent calendar on the band's website on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning the entire album will be offered as a free download* – for one day only.

Albarn confirmed that Gorillaz is taking a break following the completion of its world tour which ends in New Zealand on December 21, in time for the festive holidays. "I'm putting [Gorillaz] back in a box for a while," he said. "Just putting it back on the shelf."

Any subsequent iPad Gorillaz album may be called Christmas Vacation.
