Finally - later than originally anticipated - Radiohead chose Valentine's Day to pop the date. In fact Radiohead announced more than one date, but it still remains to be seen whether these dates will yet prove the most important in the 2011 music calendar.
"Thank You For Waiting," the band's official website stated early this morning. Teasingly, fans were then presented with an "Alice in Wonderland" moment when they clicked on the link: "The new Radiohead record, The King Of Limbs, is through here," the next page announced.
Click on this link and the order page appears: "Newspaper Album - PRESALE," the page explains. "Radiohead's new record, The King Of Limbs, is presented here as [perhaps] the world's first Newspaper Album."
The Newspaper Album, consisting of two vinyl records, a compact disc, and "many large sheets of artwork," won't be ready for shipping until May 9th, but the album can be downloaded in digital format this Saturday, February 19th.
The name of the new album relates to an oak tree in Wiltshire's Savernake Forest.
The release breaks with the honesty-box tactic the band initially employed for In Rainbows in 2007, but emulates the current trend in marketing a collector's edition set. Radiohead has not yet released any information about The King of Limbs' contents, though it has confirmed that the band's longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich produced the record.
No previews, no leaks, but many fans from across the world have already pre-ordered one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year.
