Featured Band (8): Dubbed "Princes of Leon," Nashville-Based Mona Want To Be "Bigger Than Bono" PDF Print E-mail

Featured Band (8): Dubbed "Mona are Sun Studio’s Million Dollar Quartet (Presley, Perkins, Lewis, Cash) rebooted 54 years on," the band's Blog claims. "They’re rock revivalists, in the sense that they like, as Nick [Brown, Mona's founder and frontman] puts it, 'the golden age of the United States – the James Dean, Marilyn Monroe type stuff'.” Nashville-based Mona plays rock'n'roll "songs for the city folk" and its sound is a cross between the music of fellow Nashville band Kings of Leon and the American heartland rock of singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen.

This iconography and idealism, the Blog quotes Brown as saying, informed the writing of "Listen to Your Love" – and the reasons why it became the band's first single.

“It felt kinda reminiscent of some of the old stuff,” Brown said. “Even Roy Orbison-type melodies. But still, a little bit of a punk thing in there. It just felt like a good first introduction, a first impression.”

"They're old-fashioned... Boasting huge sounds and epic gestures, this bunch of 50s throwbacks are on a mission to be 'bigger than Bono,' Paul Lester reported in the Guardian. "You hear the line 'the major labels are going mad for them' a lot these days, but with Mona you can believe it."

Gorillaz Free Xmas Album Called The Fall PDF Print E-mail
Written by DJ Space

Gorillaz Free Xmas Album Called The FallDamon Albarn has revealed that the new Gorillaz album available as a "free" download* on Christmas Day will be called The Fall. Albarn revealed the title of the album during an interview with Sydney, Australia radio station Triple J.

The album was recorded in hotel rooms on Albarn’s iPad during the Gorillaz tour of the US in October. "I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," Albarn said in November.

The new record is named after the autumn season in which it was written. "I wrote it in October," he explained. "I didn't want to call it October because U2 had already used that. Although I like the word October, I like the month, I like the feeling."

Albarn will make a video of a track from The Fall available through an advent calendar on the band's website on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning the entire album will be offered as a free download* – for one day only.

Albarn confirmed that Gorillaz is taking a break following the completion of its world tour which ends in New Zealand on December 21, in time for the festive holidays. "I'm putting [Gorillaz] back in a box for a while," he said. "Just putting it back on the shelf."

Any subsequent iPad Gorillaz album may be called Christmas Vacation.

March Discovers R.E.M.'s Collapse With Free DownloadR.E.M. is set to release its new album Collapse Into Now on March 7. The band has released the lead-track "Discoverer" as a free download from its official website. R.E.M. has further confirmed that the record will be available for iTunes pre-order on December 21. Listen to "Discoverer" here.

The release date of R.E.M.'s fifteenth studio album was reported by NME.

A feature on R.E.M and the making of the band's new album is also due to appear in the January edition of Q Magazine.

In the article, Peter Buck (guitar) and Mike Mills (bass and keyboards) talk about recording at the fabled Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the band's time in New Orleans during the making of Collapse Into Now, how the album got its name, and about the guests who appear on the new record.

R.E.M. spent the summer in Hansa Studios, Berlin, where David Bowie recorded his landmark Heroes album in 1977 and U2 reinvented themselves with Achtung Baby.

“Great records were made there and I’m sure horrible records were made there, too,” Buck joked. “But you think about the good ones.”

Coldplay's Concept Album Follows Death And All His Friends PDF Print E-mail

Coldplay's Concept Album Follows Death And All His FriendsAfter ten years and four albums, Coldplay has confirmed it is finally on the verge of releasing its first "concept" album. Whereas Viva La Vida explored the grander sweeping themes of love and war, frontman Chris Martin said the new album will be more intimate by comparison.

"It's from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost," Martin said. "Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together."

Chris Martin and gutarist Jonny Buckland spoke to BBC News on Sunday.

"It's a concept album but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework," Martin added. "Does that make sense?"

The record which is still untitled is being produced by Brian Eno and Marcus Dravs, who made the band's last album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.

The Smiths' Morrissey has added his support to former band member Johnny Marr against British Prime Minister David Cameron, whilst clarifying the reason for the recent outburst by Marr through Twitter.

In a message he posted on Morrissey zine True To You on Saturday, Morrissey criticized Cameron, saying he "hunts and shoots and kills stags," adding, "apparently for pleasure."

"I would like to, if I may, offer support to Johnny Marr," Morrissey wrote. "To those who have expressed concern over Johnny's words in view of the fact that David Cameron has pledged immense allegiance to the music of the Smiths, I would like to try to explain why I think Johnny is right not to be flattered."

Morrissey conceded that, "It is true that music is a universal language – the ONLY universal language, and belongs to all, one way or another."

He continued, "[Nevertheless] It was not for such people that either 'Meat is Murder' or 'The Queen is Dead' were recorded; in fact, they were made as a reaction against such violence."

He further explained that David Cameron "wanted to repeal the Hunting Act, which would mean the brutal killing of foxes, hares, deer, badgers, otters – just about anything that moves."
