Featured Band (6): Still Corners Summons the Spirits and Turns Heads PDF Print E-mail
Written by DJ Space

Featured Band (6): Still Corners Summons the Spirits and Turns HeadsAn air of mystery surrounds Still Corners. The band is based in London, England and plays ethereal dreampop, but the band members prefer to be nameless and - judging from their ghostly presence in the band's sole music video "Wish" and the heavenly tones of the singer's voice - for all intents and purposes they may in truth have spirited there from the ethers.

The band's Myspace page tells us little else about its members other than they are "looking for a sunset bird in winter."

Under "About Still Corners," it states, "This music was free and discovered" - which may help resolve any copyright issues. It continues, "While walking in the woods with loved ones we DANCED as the ashes of the departed swirled about us like whirls of snow and birch tree branches heavy with ice bowed to touch our faces slowly spilling their white glass to the forest floor," and adds, "We found in the mess of these silent shapes this light show and these reflected tones."

Thankfully, the band's website has a "Bio" page which informs, "With a deep love of film and sixties-sound production, Still Corners write dreamy pop songs, full of swirling organs, big drums and lush vocals," only stopping to tell us that the band is "building on a reputation for heart-stopping live performances" and "mixing film projection with soaring soundscapes." Mystery solved.

Radiohead's Thom Yorke Helps Turn the Tide With King Canute PDF Print E-mail
Written by DJ Space

Radiohead's Thom Yorke Helps Turn the Tide With King CanuteMore than 2,000 people braved the wind and rain on the seafront at Brighton, England, on Saturday to form an image of King Canute designed by Radiohead lead-singer Thom Yorke. The public art display was designed to send a climate warning to political leaders in the run-up to the UN Climate Talks in Cancun.

Yorke explained, “The plan is to make images visible from the skies to remind those in Cancun that we can't keep putting this off.”

The image formed on the beaches of Brighton-Hove was designed by Yorke and his long-time collaborator Stanley Donwood. The picture also appeared on the cover of Yorke’s album Eraser. Yorke helped promote the event on Radiohead’s website and four million person strong Facebook page.

According to legend, King Canute set his throne by the sea shore and commanded the tide to halt, only to be soaked by the ocean’s waves. Just as Canute realized his own hubris, world leaders today must realize the dangers of ignoring climate change and rise to solving the challenge.

Italy (Reuters) - U2 frontman Bono burst back onto rock's center stage on Friday after a two-month absence for a back injury, as the Irish band resumed what its manager predicts will be the most lucrative concert tour in history.

U2 shook a packed Olympic stadium in the northern Italian city of Turin as Bono strutted, pranced, jogged and danced with little sign of being a 50-year-old rock star just 10 weeks off spinal surgery.

"I don't really know how to hold back, is the problem. You have to let the songs sing you at a certain point," Bono told Reuters just before relaunching the second leg of U2's 360 Degree Tour, so called because fans surround a giant circular platform.

U2 and Bono, who said he had done rehabilitation work for three to four hours a day, kicked off a rousing set with "Beautiful Day" and "Magnificent." They also played two new tracks called "North Star Acoustic" and "Glastonbury."
