Featured Band (11): Oxford Band Trophy Wife Shows Languor Is An EnergyTrophy Wife is part of the emergent collective of musicians, artists and writers based in Oxford, England known as Blessing Force, whose acts - which include Jonquil, Neon Pulse, Pet Moon, Chad Valley, Fixers, Solid Gold Dragons, and Rhosyn - are following closely in the footsteps of local math rock band Foals. The band employs a system of electronic keyboards, drum patterns and plucked guitars, accompanied by delicate, softly sung vocals, to create an intelligent indie-electronica sound that is making welcome waves in the music world.

The line-up consists of Jody Prewett (vocals, guitar, and bass), Ben Rimmer (keyboards), and Kit Monteith (drums and percussion), who previously played together as a trio in a math rock band called Wait For Coniston. The band members also exercise control over all aspects of their artwork, photography, and videos.

"We are all descendants of Cornish sailors, and Jody has an encyclopedic knowledge of Welsh sporting statistics between the years 1991-1995," Trophy Wife told There Goes the Fear.

"We have been making music together for about 7 years in various different forms. Us meeting each other was a case of mistaken identity; Jody pretended to be a female drummer so he could get into Kit’s post-rock band," Trophy Wife revealed to There Goes the Fear. "We started recording dancey music late at night over a few drinks. Things grew and we set out to challenge ourselves and do something that was new to us."

Kit Monteith's drum kit is "the only one of its kind and Kit learned to play drums on it during his youth." Trophy Wife disclosed to TLOBF. "The drum set up... was built in the 1970's by a jazz musician."

Featured Band (10): World Domination Is the Aim of Fashionable Young Empires and Its Electro Dance-Rock Beat PDF Print E-mail

Featured Band (10): World Domination Is the Aim of Fashionable Young Empires and Its Electro Dance-Rock Beat"Self-described as World Beat meets Haute Rock," the band's Bio states, "Young Empires deliver fresh yet distinguished dance tracks that make you want to strut." Whether the band will prove world beaters is hard to predict, but certainly Young Empires has an international appeal and the beat of the electronic dance music played by this fashionable, Toronto-based trio is hard to resist.

"Before long, we are all going to be living under their empire," OTM predicted. "They won’t rule over us, but their music might."

"With their electro sound, energetic front man, Matthew Vlahovich, and catchy rhythm provided by Ellingson and base player Jake Palahnuk... There is no doubt that this band will take the music scene by storm in the next few months," OTM reported following a concert in October.

"Any indie-disco merchants that have the smarts and balls to pinch the beat from Spiller's 'Groovejet' are alright in my books..." NME commented.

Featured Band (9): The Vaccines - Rock Fundamentalists PDF Print E-mail
Written by DJ Space

Featured Band (9): The Vaccines - Rock Fundamentalists"I don't consider our songs to be growers that take ten listens to get into," Frontman Justin Young said. "People will either like us or they won't, it's that simple." The band is called The Vaccines. It's Jay Jay Pistolet and Freddie Cowan, younger brother of Tom from The Horrors. The Vaccines' tracks are short - similar to American Hardcore punk - but played in the style of good, old-fashioned Rock'n'Roll. In fact, the music's so retro, it's Pop. It's like listening to the Ramones, The Beach Boys, and The Shadows, all playing with the distorted guitars of The Jesus and Mary Chain.

This London band only played its first-ever show two months ago and just released its debut single, but will make its American debut headling Bowery Ballroom, New York on January 20 and then play Glasslands two days later. In October, the Vaccines played their first London concert. An audience of nearly three hundred included Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Marcus Mumford, members of White Lies and The Maccabees, and a few journalists. More than two hundred were locked outside, including some of the band's friends and Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs.

"On the strength of just a demo and a soon-to-be-released debut single, nearly 300 people have turned up for the Vaccines' first hometown gig [Flowerpot, London]; another 200 have had to be turned away," Betty Clarke reported in the Guardian.

(Reuters) - Canadian rock band Arcade Fire notched up their first UK number one album on Sunday when their latest release debuted at the top of the charts, the Official Charts Company said.

"The Suburbs," the band's first album for three years, went one better than their last release "Neon Bible" which reached number two.

It marks the follow-up to 2006's "Neon Bible" and their 2004 debut "Funeral," which each sold about half a million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Neon Bible" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

The band retains a tight grip on its destiny: it owns its own recording studio, master recordings and publishing rights; licenses those rights to different labels across the globe, territory by territory; refuses corporate sponsorships, private-party gigs and most commercial placements; and calls the shots for every major decision.
