"You Were a Kindness": The National's Heartfelt New Single PDF Print E-mail

According to the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine, "You Were a Kindness" is the next single to be released by The National, even though it was not featured on their 2010 album release, High Violet.

"This gloomy piano track pulls you so deep into the fog of a bad breakup that you'll want to call one of your exes and apologise for everything." Indeed, it's easy to visualise baritone Matt Berninger reaching for his phone and, accompanied by bar piano, singing into his beer glass, "You made a slow disaster out of me... Why would you shatter somebody like me?"

In August, The National unveiled this haunting new track “You Were a Kindness” on Minnesota Public Radio’s “The Current.” (Click here to listen.)

Formed in 1999, the Ohio-raised, Brooklyn-based band consists of vocalist Matt Berninger fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

Flamingo Offers Flowers to Killers' Victims PDF Print E-mail

Flamingo Offers Flowers to Killers' VictimsThe Killers' Brandon Flowers is set to release his debut solo album Flamingo in the UK on Monday, September 6th, and in the US on September 14th. The album has already been preceded by Flowers’ first self-penned solo single "Crossfire" which is currently #6 on the US Alternative Songs' Chart and reached #8 in its first week on the UK Singles Chart, where it features on both the A playlist for BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2.

On their website, Spin magazine showcases exclusive 45-second preview clips of all 10 album tracks (click here), together with an interview with Brandon Flowers published earlier last month.

The theme of Flamingo is inspired by Flowers’ hometown, Las Vegas, known as "Sin City". He named the album after Flamingo Road, in the heart of Vegas, where he had his first job and met his wife, Tana. Sam’s Town, the casino which inspired the title of The Killers’ 2006 album release, is also situated on Flamingo Road.

The songs on Flowers’ debut solo album were originally penned for his band, The Killers, “on a cheap Yamaha keyboard on the bus” during their Day and Age tour. Within the album there are other references to Flowers’ experiences in Las Vegas. He says the opening track, “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas”, is “an anthem to the iconic sign” that welcomes visitors to the city.

Pearl Jam to mark 20 years at Young's charity gig PDF Print E-mail

Pearl Jam to mark 20 years at Young's charity gigNEW YORK (Billboard) - Pearl Jam fans, save the date: guitarist Stone Gossard says the closest thing to a 20th birthday gig for the band will be a slot on the bill of Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit in northern California on October 23 and 24.

"The only thing we've got going on in October is Bridge School, which is really special," Gossard told Billboard while in New York to support the new album by his side-band, Brad. "So that's our 20th anniversary, which is fitting. It's perfect: not too blown up. It's not about us, it about all those kids that are on stage with you and about Neil Young and his commitment, his influence."

It will be Pearl Jam's eighth Bridge appearance. The group first played the benefit, which supports Young's school for children with severe physical disabilities, back in 1992.

The Bridge School dates, which will likely be held at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, begin the day after Pearl Jam's exact anniversary. The band, then called Mookie Blaylock, played its first show in Seattle's tiny Off Ramp club on October 22.

Voice of Authority: Interpol Arrests House of Blues PDF Print E-mail

Voice of Authority: Interpol Arrests House of Blues Rather than relying on an old standard track as an opener as so many bands do, last night at Orlando’s House of Blues Interpol started with a track from their forthcoming album aptly titled Interpol. This is easily one of the rawest, most authentic bands I’ve seen in longer than I can remember.

This band deftly ripped through nearly an hour and half of both old favorite tracks like “Rest My Chemistry”, “Evil”, “Obstacle 1”, “Narc”, “ PDA”,  “Wrecking Ball” and “The Heinrich Maneuver” while throwing in a balanced mix of forthcoming tracks, most notably “Barricade” and “Lights”.

In addition to an air-tight show, their encore consisted of four tracks including NYC” and “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down” and ended with “Slow Hands”, which was anything but slow.  This show was brass knuckles without the anger:  strong, fervent, and a complete blow to the senses.

Fronted by the almost otherworldly deep-throated crooning of skinny, blonde Paul Banks and energized by the English import Daniel Kessler and drummer Sam Fogarino, Interpol didn't let up. Supported by newcomers Dave Pajo and Brandon Curtis, they were straightforward, professional, and didn’t spend time jerking around with lame introductions of band members or blowing smoke up the audience’s ass about how they’re the best audience ever
