Kings of Leon reject "Glee" request PDF Print E-mail

Kings of Leon reject LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - With everybody from Paul McCartney to Madonna clamoring to get their music on "Glee," at least one act is refusing to license its music to the TV show.

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill told U.K. music newspaper NME that he's rejected the show's request to use his music, adding that he's never watched the series although "apparently everybody loves it."

Followill also said the band turned down "Ugly Betty."

British rock band Coldplay also turned down "Glee," then changed its mind, apologized and gave the Fox show access to the band's entire catalog.

On the subject of lending the music of Kings of Leon to Hollywood, Followill added: "We had some people call us up wanting to know if we'd allow 'Use Somebody' to appear in the trailer for their next movie, and we turned them down."

Indie band Ra Ra Riot readies second album PDF Print E-mail

Indie band Ra Ra Riot readies second albumNEW YORK (Billboard) - Just as the members of indie-pop band Ra Ra Riot were getting ready to hit the big time in 2007, tragedy struck, with the drowning death of the group's drummer, John Pike.

But the band rebounded, releasing "The Rhumb Line" on Barsuk Records in 2008 and touring extensively. Now the members face another challenge -- releasing a follow-up and sustaining their career.

The list of indie bands felled by the fabled sophomore slump is long and ever-growing. But Ra Ra Riot, whose album "The Orchard" is out August 24, again on Barsuk, seems well positioned to beat the odds.

"Instead of being just super hyped and buzzed about, the band has developed a dedicated fan base," manager Josh Roth says. "They love touring and they love playing live, and I think they are in a great position to just keep growing."

Canada rockers Arcade Fire heat up U.S. album chart PDF Print E-mail

Canada rockers Arcade Fire heat up U.S. album chartLOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Montreal rock band Arcade Fire illuminated the top spot on the U.S. pop chart for the first time in its career on Wednesday.

The group sold 156,000 copies of "The Suburbs," its third release, during the week ended August 8, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its previous album, 2007's "Neon Bible," debuted at No. 2 with 92,000 copies.

"The Suburbs" reaped the benefits of a week-long sale in Amazon's MP3 store, where it was priced at $3.99. Apple's iTunes Store offered the set for a standard $9.99. While SoundScan's data do not reveal how many were sold only through Amazon's MP3 store, downloads from all retailers made up 62% of the album's first week (97,000 downloads out of 156,000 total sales). Comparably, "Neon Bible" saw 30% of its first week come from digital sales (27,000 of its 92,000 opening frame).

Last week's No. 1, Avenged Sevenfold's "Nightmare," slid to No. 3 with 45,000. Eminem's "Recovery" held at No. 2 with 152,000.

Rock band Weezer honors "Lost" star on new album PDF Print E-mail

Rock band Weezer honors (Reuters) - "Lost" may have just ended its six-season run, but one of the TV show's stars is now immortalized on the new album by rock band Weezer.

A headshot of Jorge Garcia, the larger-than-life comic actor who played Hugo "Hurley" Reyes on the castaway series, adorns the cover of the band's upcoming eighth album. The band went one step further, and called the album "Hurley."

"The important thing was that we wanted that picture of Jorge Garcia face on the cover with no words," frontman Rivers Cuomo said in an email to Reuters. "So we just figured that everyone was going to call it Hurley, so that's how it came to be called Hurley."

The album, due in stores on September 14, marks the band's debut for Los Angeles indie punk label Epitaph Records after a 16-year stint on Universal Music Group's Geffen Records label when it enjoyed such hits as "Buddy Holly," "Beverly Hills" and "We Are all on Drugs."

Arcade Fire notch up first UK album chart-topper PDF Print E-mail

Arcade Fire notch up first UK album chart-topper(Reuters) - Canadian rock band Arcade Fire notched up their first UK number one album on Sunday when their latest release debuted at the top of the charts, the Official Charts Company said.

"The Suburbs," the band's first album for three years, went one better than their last release "Neon Bible" which reached number two.

It marks the follow-up to 2006's "Neon Bible" and their 2004 debut "Funeral," which each sold about half a million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Neon Bible" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

The band retains a tight grip on its destiny: it owns its own recording studio, master recordings and publishing rights; licenses those rights to different labels across the globe, territory by territory; refuses corporate sponsorships, private-party gigs and most commercial placements; and calls the shots for every major decision.
