Semisonic revisits "Closing Time" thanks to movie PDF Print E-mail

Semisonic revists LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Thanks to the racy red band trailer for the forthcoming Justin Timberlake-Mila Kunis rom-com "Friends with Benefits" - where a mid-coitus Kunis implores Timberlake to distract her with, what she calls, a Third Eye Blind song - Semisonic's 1998 hit "Closing Time" is experiencing a renaissance of sorts.

Long used to shoo out bar patrons who had overstayed their welcome, it's now officially entered the realm of pop culture punchline, which, for singer Dan Wilson, is both a huge compliment and cause for pause.

Fortunately, not he nor the rest of the band, which includes drummer Jacob Slichter, define their lives by this one radio moment that never went away.

THR got in touch with Wilson, now a successful songwriter for hire, who recently moved to Los Angeles, to talk about the song's legacy.

THR: As the person who wrote and sang "Closing Time," how does it feel to see the song used as a gag?

Pop-punk band A Day to Remember has memorable debut PDF Print E-mail

Pop-punk band A Day to Remember has memorable debutNEW YORK (Billboard) - Pop-punk band A Day to Remember started in 2003, playing small shows in its hometown of Ocala, Fla. Now all that groundwork - plus the audience-building foundation provided by three album releases - is paying off.

The band's fourth studio set, "What Separates Me From You" debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, selling 58,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The debut marks a personal best for the band, whose third album, 2009's "Homesick," bowed at No. 21 on first-week sales of 22,000.

To date, "What Separates Me From You" has sold 80,000, according to SoundScan.

Propelling awareness of the new album is the high-powered single "All I Want," which is No. 19 on Billboard's Rock Songs chart.

"All I Want"-about living life for yourself and being happy-is a combination of energetic rock hooks with a pop-styled chorus that's as catchy as it is aggressive. The band's distinctive mix of hardcore and pop-punk is one of the keys to its success.

Kings of Leon ditch "party vibe" with new album PDF Print E-mail

Kings of Leon ditch LONDON (Reuters) - Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon have left the "party vibe" behind with their latest album "Come Around Sundown," and they put the change of pace down to getting older and pining for home.

Their fifth studio album, released last month, topped the charts in Britain where the band has long been a fixture at the summit of the album listings, and hit number two in the key U.S. market -- their highest position so far, according to Billboard. "There isn't as much of a party vibe as far as fast songs (go)," lead singer Anthony Caleb Followill told Reuters in a recent interview to discuss the record.

Like his two brothers and cousin who make up the rest of the foursome, he is known simply by his middle name Caleb.

"There's only a couple up-tempo numbers. I think that has a lot to do with not just where we are as people but the fact that we recorded in New York.

Psychocandy? It's a Hard Record to PlayThe Jesus and Mary Chain's frontman Jim Reid has revealed that the group's ground breaking and highly influential 1985 debut studio album Psychocandy is "a very hard record to play live," but he "wouldn't rule out" the band getting back together to mark next month's 25th anniversary of its release to tour the album in vogue with current trends.

Reid made his comments in an interview with VPM timed to celebrate Psychocandy’s 25th anniversary and promote the release of a new Jesus And Mary Chain collection, Upside Down -The Best Of. "As far as Psychocandy is concerned I wouldn’t rule it out, but the truth of the matter is it’s a very hard record to play live." The release of the documentary feature film Upside Down: The Story of Creation Records is also scheduled to coincide with the commemorative compilation.

"Christ only knows how we managed to do it all those years ago, but we probably didn't! We were probably just so drunk that we thought we did," he added.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan collapsed onstage Thursday night in Tampa, Fla., falling into his drummer's kit as the band performed its 1995 hard rock hit "Bullet with Butterfly Wings."

Almost immediately after falling, Corgan got back to his feet and continued playing. The lead singer and guitarist later commented on the incident on his Twitter page.

"For those that saw me fall last night during Bullet, that wasn't a stage move or clumsiness, that was me blacking out and wiping out," Corgan wrote. "I have no memory of falling against the drum riser and my guitar cabinet, but I can tell you I've got quite a good bruise + am moving slow."

The Smashing Pumpkins embarked on a summer club tour in early July; the trek continues Friday night in Knoxville, Tenn., and wraps August 28 at the Sunset Strip Music Festival in Los Angeles.
