U2 is world's top earning band: surveyNEW YORK (Reuters) - Irish rockers U2, who netted $130 million from their massive world tour and other deals, are the world's top-earning musicians, according to Forbes.com.

The group made $10 million in ticket sales on each tour stop and, along with merchandising revenue, hit the top of the list ahead of Australian heavy metal group AC/DC, who earned $114 million from their worldwide tour.

"Nearly half of the artists that make up this year's list of the top-earning music acts have been around long enough that they could have appeared on the soundtrack to "Back to the Future," Forbes.com said.  The financial website added that the top two bands could make as much as $372 million between June 2009 and June 2010.

R.E.M.'s fifteenth studio album Collapse Into Now features vocals by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, American singer-songwriter Patti Smith, and Canadian-born electronic musician Peaches.

In October, R.E.M.'s manager Bertis Downs told BBC Radio 6 Music that the band's new album will be called Collapse Into Now. Yesterday, multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills revealed on SPIN that the new album, due to be released early next year, has a more "expansive" sound than 2008's Accelerate and includes some special guests.

The twelve-track release is produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee, who produced Accelerate and whose credits also include studio albums for Snow Patrol, U2, Block Party, Weezer, and Editors. The album includes "All the Best," "Walk It Back," and the record's closing song "Blue," which features vocals from Patti Smith. The band has yet to announce a full tracklisting. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder sings on "It Happened Today," and Peaches is the vocalist on a track which has the word "alligator" in its title and features guitarist Lenny Kaye, best known as a member of the Patti Smith Group.
