Radiohead Plan New Album Release PDF Print E-mail

Radiohead Plan New Album ReleaseIn an article written for Index on Censorship, Radiohead's bassist Colin Greenwood reveals that they "have just finished another group of songs, and have begun to wonder about how to release them."

Index on Censorship is "Britain’s leading organisation promoting freedom of expression." In his essay, Greenwood explains why the band released their last album direct to their fans, "This desire to use the technology was driven by distrust and frustration with trying to broadcast our music via traditional media, such as radio and television." He adds, "With In Rainbows, we were able to be the first people to digitally release our record, directly to people’s personal computers."

In 2007, the band released their seventh album, In Rainbows, as an internet download for which fans could pay whatever they felt was appropriate. On the merits of the experiment, he writes, "For all the giddy prognostications, the most important reason for the success of In Rainbows was the quality of the music. I am optimistic that if you make good work you can secure the patronage of your fans."  He continues, "Three years later, we have just finished another group of songs, and have begun to wonder about how to release them in a digital landscape that has changed again."

Brandon Flowers summons desert spirits on "Flamingo" PDF Print E-mail

brandon-flowers-summons-desert-spirits-on-qflamingoq

NEW YORK (Billboard) - While embarking on a solo career, Brandon Flowers has made it clear that his band, the Killers, isn't breaking up.

In fact, the singer says that the point of "Flamingo," due September 14 on Island Records, was to deliver these songs to the public so that his group could eventually return to creating as a cohesive unit.

"Of course, some of ("Flamingo") could have made for great Killers songs," Flowers says, "but I wanted the next Killers record to be a very strong collaboration. That's when we're at our best."

Instead of a vanity project or a means of separating Flowers from his platinum alt-rock act, "Flamingo" is the sound of the frontman's creative juices flowing while the rest of the Killers -- guitarist Dave Keuning, bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. -- took a break from the studio.

From the haunted stomp of "Only the Young" to the lonely falsetto of "Playing With Fire," "Flamingo" (named after Vegas' Flamingo Road) sounds like a more personal riff on the Killers' sound. Flowers, however, sees the album as an homage to his hometown and its barren surroundings: He says he wanted to "summon the spirits of the desert" on the album.

No Cherry-picking Necessary: Ra Ra Riot’s The Orchard Produces Bountiful Fruit PDF Print E-mail

No Cherry-picking Necessary: Ra Ra Riot’s The Orchard Produces Bountiful FruitSextet Ra Ra Riot has finally produced a new full-length album that is as solid as the two years fans have waited for it.

Vocalist Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos, guitarist Milo Bonacci, cellist Alexandra Lawn, violinist Rebecca Zeller, and drummer Gabriel Duquette deliver tracks as crisp and sweet as autumn in their native upstate New York.  Despite the fact that they all look like they should be at home studying for finals, this album is mature and confident.  No standing against the wall at this school dance.  Their fresh young faces betray the depth of their talent and their lyrics.

Their first single, “Boy” is poppy, upbeat, and definitely worth a good head bobbing.  Be sure to check out the video here .

Despite it not containing many individual singles, as a whole the album sounds as a live show without the annoying crowd background noise.  While still a studio album, it has all the energy of a live performance.  It swerves, it sways, and it swoons.

Parenthood hasn't mellowed Sleater-Kinney's Tucker PDF Print E-mail

Parenthood hasn't mellowed Sleater-Kinney's TuckerNEW YORK (Billboard) - The prevailing cultural attitude, at least for the middle-class, Caucasian, Western world, seems to be that the moment a woman gives birth, her taste in culture dies. "Mom blogs" peddle mewling folk singers, and your infant suddenly determines not only your musical preferences, but your outlook on life.

Corin Tucker, who co-founded the critically adored rock band Sleater-Kinney in the '90s and helped lead the trio through an accolade-laden career, admits that being a parent -- she has two children -- has changed some of her views. But she makes it clear that her debut solo album, "1,000 Years," out October 5 on Kill Rock Stars, is not "mom rock."

"I joked at one point that I was bringing sexy back to moms," Tucker says from her home in Portland, Oregon. "But this album is from a different place; I'm older and more comfortable now. I can take the time to work on the music and the craft, and I'm not so impulsive."

Tucker says that she looked to icons like Joan Jett and Patti Smith for inspiration. "Patti is in her 60s and she is still making vital music," she says. "It doesn't have to be about being a sexy 25-year-old. You can still make an intense, driving record."

Carl Barat moves on with solo album, fatherhood PDF Print E-mail

Carl Barat moves on with solo album, fatherhood(Reuters) - Carl Barat is a busy but a happy man these days.

The British singer and guitarist, who is about to become a father, will release his self-titled debut solo album on October 4.

There is also a book of memoirs out on September 30, and icing on the cake, Barat reunited with his former Libertines bandmates and fellow frontman Pete Doherty for two triumphant and highly emotional gigs at the Leeds and Reading festivals last month.

Barat told Reuters in an interview he was in favor of a third Libertines album following the comeback gigs but that right now his agenda was: "My album, my tour and my baby."

"I am very happy, nervous and excited. It's time for a change. It's time to move on," the 32-year old Barat said, as he confirmed he would have a boy in December.

Barat was in Paris to promote his 10-track solo album that also features collaborations with musicians like The Divine Comedy frontman Neil Hannon or Andrew Wyatt of Swedish electro-pop band Miike Snow.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It's been almost 25 years since John Rzeznik and Robby Takac formed the Goo Goo Dolls. In that time, they've scored such hits as "Iris" -- which spent 17 weeks at No. 1 -- "Slide" and a cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit."

Their ninth studio album, "Something for the Rest of Us," will be released August 3 on Warner Bros. Records. And while the album is full of the hooky pop-rock that has sustained the band for decades, lead singer/guitarist Rzeznik's songwriting takes on a more somber, serious tone.

"I went through a period of time when I was working on the record, looking at where the record business is and everything, and just feeling sort of lost -- "What is my purpose?" I'm in my 40s, and the music business has become about instant pop stars, very disposable music. I thought, "Wow, what is going to happen to me when I don't have this job anymore? What am I going to do with myself all day?""
