Radiohead: Honesty without Preservatives Added

It's the quintessential debate in the music media: what is the best rock band in the world? (See Poll)

Every now and then, the specialty media release lists and comparisons between bands that made their place in the music industry, deciding with a higher or lower degree of consensus the so-called “best band” in the world. The contenders seem to be always the same: U2 (1976- ), Coldplay (1997- ), The Beatles (1960-1970) vs. The Rolling Stones (1962- ), Oasis (1991- ), Blur (1989-2003; 2008- )... and Radiohead (1986- ).

To some extent, and considering any of the above's qualities and hard-work, Radiohead beats them all by far in terms of honesty when choosing a band that really has left its mark in the rock and roll panorama. Where U2 and Coldplay have become too big, or where Oasis sang the pride of being a hooligan (and being a Beatles fan!), Radiohead has cemented a career that began in 1986.

TV on the Radio's Sitek launches solo "Balloon" PDF Print E-mail

TV on the Radio's Sitek launches solo NEW YORK (Billboard) - When Dave Sitek is described as ambitious, it's in relation to the intricate production and instrumentation he employs with his primary band, indie fave TV on the Radio. But Sitek's true ambition, he reveals, is a little more ... blond.

"I was trying to make Madonna's first record," Sitek says, punctuating the statement with a giggle. "I was trying to make something that was clear and bright and fast-paced."

Widely considered a hipster king and a Brooklyn mover and shaker, despite the fact that he now lives in Los Angeles, Sitek says he brought his '80s influences to bear on his forthcoming solo project, "Maximum Balloon," out September 21 on Interscope.

"Nile Rodgers is one of my favorite producers," Sitek says of the man behind such albums as Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Duran Duran's "Notorious." "I feel like people have a hard time taking the '80s stuff seriously because not enough time has passed, but one day we'll look back and realize how important it was."

Owl City preps new album; hopes to nab Taylor Swift PDF Print E-mail

Owl City preps new album; hopes to nab Taylor SwiftDETROIT (Billboard) - Adam Young said he's "halfway done" with the next Owl City album, and he's hatching plans for at least one eyebrow-raising collaboration.

"One of my dreams has been to get Taylor Swift to do a song," Young, who remixed John Mayer's "Half of My Heart" (featuring Swift) told Billboard.com.

"I have kind of a cool idea for this sort of hybrid, countryish direction for a new song that would be perfect for her," Young said. "We're hoping for the best. I can't even imagine how busy she is, so if it happens, it's cool. Fingers crossed."

Young -- who recently had to cancel some of his Maroon 5 opening dates due to a kidney stone -- says that he's corresponded via e-mail with Swift "a few times. She says she's a fan, and vice versa, for sure, so hopefully there'll be collaborating."

Young adds that he'd also like to work with Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba, who's "a pal. It would be fun to get his voice on there."

Concert listing sites help acts reach fans PDF Print E-mail

Concert listing sites help acts reach fansDENVER (Billboard) - This year's decline in touring business revenue has caused the music industry to take a hard look at how it approaches concert promotion, pricing and scheduling.

That's good news for the many tour-related Internet startups that emerged back when it looked as if touring was going to single-handedly save the music business. Rather than hurting their chances for success, the changing touring landscape is instead giving them a chance to shine.

According to Billboard Boxscore, North American box-office dollars totaled $886 million in the first half of 2010, down $250 million, or 22 percent, from the same period last year. There are a number of factors behind this decline, all of which play into the hands of these new companies taking a digital approach to the touring business. With the economy such that it is, music fans are becoming more selective in their purchasing decisions.

Additionally, the downturn in music sales has led to more bands touring to make up for the lost revenue, and that's led to a glut of tours. Concert ticket aggregator Eventful has 383,552 events scheduled for August; last year it had 276,844 listed for the month.

Radiohead drummer marches to new beat on solo album PDF Print E-mail

Radiohead drummer marches to new beat on solo albumLONDON (Billboard) - Following in the footsteps of Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl and Phil Collins, Radiohead's Philip Selway is the latest big-name drummer to step out from behind his kit and make a solo record, trading in his drums for a guitar and a microphone.

His debut album, "Familial" -- set for release August 31 on Nonesuch Records in the United States and a day earlier in the United Kingdom on Bella Union -- features collaborations with Lisa Germano, Soul Coughing's Sebastian Steinberg and Wilco's Glenn Kotche and Patrick Sansone.

"It's a world apart from what I do in Radiohead," Selway says of the album's pared-down, acoustic sound.

It's had a very long gestation period. It's something that grew out of stuff I was writing on the road and in my own bedroom, going back about seven or eight years. These fragments of music gained a head of steam, and I reached a point where I came to see their potential as a collection of songs that I couldn't see working for Radiohead.
