Featured Band (5): Brother Aiming Big, Discovers Oasis PDF Print E-mail

Featured Band (5): Brother Aiming Big, Discovers OasisIn his poem "Slough," John Betjeman damned the town with the opening lines, "Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough! It isn't fit for humans now..." Nevertheless, there is a strong possibility that the next big thing in "Gritpop" will come from this unfashionable English town. "Brother are four boys from Slough who... are basically displaced Mancunians," Paul Lester wrote for the Guardian. The band has already been asked to support Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye on its 2011 arena tour and to be involved in his Pretty Green clothing label. It's the return of Gritpop with plenty of unashamed coolkid swagger from Brother.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe has tipped them. "So that Zane Lowe has been playing Darling Buds Of May on Radio 1, and subsequently is putting Slough on the map," Brother writes on its website acidlove.net. "I always knew he had good taste." Zane Lowe said, “If Britpop is going to make a revival, then Brother are the band to start it."

On music website Last.fm the band is simply listed as, "Brother, a new four piece from Slough, UK."

Portishead Announces Mirror Shows for 2011Trip-hop electronic band Portishead has just announced that, together with All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP), it will curate the first UK "I'll Be Your Mirror" event in July 2011 at Alexandra Palace, London. Portishead also disclosed plans to play in Europe in June/July and in the US during September/October.

Acting as a sister event to ATP Festivals and named after the B-side to The Velvet Underground's original "All Tomorrow's Parties" 7" single, "I'll Be Your Mirror" will be a new series of artist curated music, film, and art events taking place in cities worldwide.

Portishead will headline both nights of the festival, during the weekend of July 23rd and 24th, with a different supporting line-up joining them each day.

At this point these are the only UK shows Portishead plan to play in 2011.

Portishead previously hosted the ATP "Nightmare before Christmas" party in 2007 when it also played live on both nights of the festival.

Featured Band (4): Let's Buy Happiness Recaptures The Sundays' Sound PDF Print E-mail

Late 8Featured Band (4): Let's Buy Happiness Recaptures The Sundays' Sound0's and 90's band The Sundays always had exactly the right name for a band whose albums were perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. Just as the music of The Sundays is remembered fondly for the ethereal sound of Harriet Wheeler's vocals, the same can be said about the fledgling recordings of Let's Buy Happiness and the melodic tones of Sarah Hall. This is not a disservice to the musical abilities of Wheeler's partner David Gavurin or to the undoubted talents of band members of Let's Buy Happiness (which are all integral parts of the whole), but it is a fact of life in popular music - as 70's musician and composer Richard Carpenter may attest. The resemblance of Hall's voice to that of Wheeler's is both uncanny and welcome at the same time.

"They take the ecclesiastical soundscape as designed by Robin Guthrie [of the Cocteau Twins] et al and give it a poppy spin... [Sarah Hall's] got a voice that connotes angelic purity," Paul Lester wrote for the Guardian. "If Let's Buy Happiness had been around circa 1989/90, they would have been duking it out with The Sundays for the front cover of Melody Maker or NME."

Gorillaz Make First Record on An iPad"I've made it on an iPad," Damon Albarn has claimed. "I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," he continued, talking about the next Gorillaz album. "I'm going to try and put it out before Christmas."

In an interview with NME, Albarn said that he has been working on a follow-up to the cartoon group's Plastic Beach while on tour with the band. "I fell in love with my iPad as soon as I got it, so I've made a completely different kind of record," he said.

"I hope I'll be making the first record [on an iPad]." he continued. "Which is ironic, being the sort of technophobe and Luddite that I am."

Albarn has been recording tracks for the new album while touring America with the Gorillaz. "It's a studio album made in hotel rooms across America," he added.

Listeners can expect to find an American influence on the record. The album is "more American-sounding than Blur," he commented. "It sounds like an English voice that has been put through a vocoder of America."
