Kings of Leon ditch "party vibe" with new album PDF Print E-mail

Kings of Leon ditch LONDON (Reuters) - Tennessee rockers Kings of Leon have left the "party vibe" behind with their latest album "Come Around Sundown," and they put the change of pace down to getting older and pining for home.

Their fifth studio album, released last month, topped the charts in Britain where the band has long been a fixture at the summit of the album listings, and hit number two in the key U.S. market -- their highest position so far, according to Billboard. "There isn't as much of a party vibe as far as fast songs (go)," lead singer Anthony Caleb Followill told Reuters in a recent interview to discuss the record.

Like his two brothers and cousin who make up the rest of the foursome, he is known simply by his middle name Caleb.

"There's only a couple up-tempo numbers. I think that has a lot to do with not just where we are as people but the fact that we recorded in New York.

R.E.M. Collapse Into Now with GuestsR.E.M.'s fifteenth studio album Collapse Into Now features vocals by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, American singer-songwriter Patti Smith, and Canadian-born electronic musician Peaches.

In October, R.E.M.'s manager Bertis Downs told BBC Radio 6 Music that the band's new album will be called Collapse Into Now. Yesterday, multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills revealed on SPIN that the new album, due to be released early next year, has a more "expansive" sound than 2008's Accelerate and includes some special guests.

The twelve-track release is produced by Garret "Jacknife" Lee, who produced Accelerate and whose credits also include studio albums for Snow Patrol, U2, Block Party, Weezer, and Editors. The album includes "All the Best," "Walk It Back," and the record's closing song "Blue," which features vocals from Patti Smith. The band has yet to announce a full tracklisting. Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder sings on "It Happened Today," and Peaches is the vocalist on a track which has the word "alligator" in its title and features guitarist Lenny Kaye, best known as a member of the Patti Smith Group.

The View on Yesterday, Dundee guitar band The View released a free track "Sunday" on its official website. The song is a first taste of the band's forthcoming third album, which frontman Kyle Falconer promises will be "more articulate" than previous. Listen to "Sunday" from The View here.

Speaking to Scotland's Daily Record about the album which is scheduled for a spring release, Falconer said, "The new album will sound much cleaner and you'll be able to hear my vocals a lot clearer. It's more articulate."

The Scottish band is probably beat known for its single "Same Jeans." Falconer explained that the new album will be very different from 2007 debut Hats Off to the Buskers and its follow-up Which Bitch? He added, "We were proud of Which Bitch? but it wasn't well received and didn't get played much on radio. We were gutted."

Falconer revealed that his thoughts at the time were, "'We need to get back to the music rather than the craziness'."

Previous albums Hats Off to the Buskers and Which Bitch? were produced by Owen Morris, best known for his work with Oasis and The Verve, but Martin "Youth" Glover, who has made records with the Delays and the Futureheads and was founder member and bassist of UK band Killing Joke, has been chosen to produce the third album.

Death Cab Spring Release - Features Strings and Vintage KeyboardsDeath Cab for Cutie plan a spring release for its seventh studio album which features strings and vintage keyboards. The album is "a testament to where we are as a band," Ben Gibbard explained.

"It's not a guitar-based record. We've been into vintage keyboards and playing with that palette," Founder Ben Gibbard told SPIN in an interview.  "We're not adding guitars because people will be expecting them."

"I'm so proud of this album that at this point I don't care if people don't like it," he added.

The CD is expected to comprise 12 to 13 tracks. The new project doesn't yet have a title and the band is still a "couple of weeks away" from completing it. Comparing the album to guitar-based 2008 release Narrow Stairs, Gibbard continued, "This new record has turned out to be much more of a construction project."

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Reunited rock band Soundgarden will warm up for its August 8 headlining performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago's Grant Park with a show at the city's 1,400-capacity Vic Theater next Thursday.

Tickets are exclusively available to members of the band's fan club, via Soundgardenworld.com.

Soundgarden played its first show in 13 years on April 16 at the hometown Showbox at the Market. Sources say singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron have been rehearsing throughout the spring and summer ahead of Lollapalooza, but that no decision has yet been reached on how extensive the reunion will be.

There will be new music for fans to hear before too long, however. A previously unreleased Soundgarden song, "Black Rain," will appear in the next installment of the "Guitar Hero" videogame franchise, "Warriors of Rock," due in September.
