Rock band Weezer signs to Epitaph PDF Print E-mail

Rock band Weezer signs to EpitaphNEW YORK (Billboard) - After spending 16 years on Geffen Records, Weezer has gone the indie route and signed to Epitaph Records. The group's label debut, "Hurley," is due in stores September 14, preceded by first single "Memories."

Epitaph owner Brett Gurewitz announced the signing on Twitter Wednesday night, writing, "Rivers, Pat, Brian and Scott, Welcome to Epitaph homies!"

The release of "Raditude" last October fulfilled Weezer's contractual obligation to Universal Music-owned Geffen, which had handled the band since its 1994 debut "Weezer (The Blue Album)."

Los Angeles-based Epitaph's roster includes hard-rock staples Rancid and Social Distortion.

Kings of Leon moves past "Pigeon-gate" PDF Print E-mail

Kings of Leon moves past DETROIT (Billboard) - Kings of Leon's Nathan Followill is confident that organizers of the upcoming Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco will keep stray pigeons as far away from the stage as possible. But, the drummer notes, "we're bringing a couple of muzzle loaders, just in case."

He's kidding, of course. But while answering questions about the infestation of defecating pigeons that forced the cancellation of the band's July 23 show at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Mo., Followill told Billboard.com that the incident turned into a much bigger story than the band had anticipated.

"I think us trying to be the real-life Spinal Tap just got a little closer for us," Followill said during a conference call to promote the Outside Lands performance on August 15. "I think in the end, it's going to help us more than it hurt us. It's just one of those things that happened, and looking back on it now it's a lot funnier than it was at the time. But we really felt bad for the fans -- especially those that had driven a ways and stood out in the heat all day. But sometimes, y'know, s*** happens -- in this case literally.

Soundgarden plans Chicago club show next weekNEW YORK (Billboard) - Reunited rock band Soundgarden will warm up for its August 8 headlining performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago's Grant Park with a show at the city's 1,400-capacity Vic Theater next Thursday.

There will be new music for fans to hear before too long, however. A previously unreleased Soundgarden song, "Black Rain," will appear in the next installment of the "Guitar Hero" videogame franchise, "Warriors of Rock," due in September.

Kings of Leon abandon U.S. concert due to pigeon poop PDF Print E-mail

Kings of Leon abandon U.S. concert due to pigeon poop(Reuters) - American rock band Kings of Leon said they were forced to abandon a concert in St. Louis at the weekend after three songs because pigeons kept pooping on them from the rafters.

The band left the stage at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Friday after bass player Jared Followill was hit in the face by one dropping.

"Jared was hit several times during the first two songs. On the third song, when he was hit in the cheek and some of it landed near his mouth, they couldn't deal any longer," the Nashville band's publicist, Any Mendelsohn, said in a statement.

"It's not only disgusting - it's a toxic hazard. They really tried to hang in there."

Drummer Nathan Followill apologized on Twitter to fans of the Grammy-winning band which is made up of three Followill brothers and their cousin Matthew who plays lead guitar.

"So sorry St Louis. We had to bail, pigeons s***ing in Jared's mouth and it was too unsanitary to continue," he wrote.

"Don't take it out on Jared ... Sorry for all who (traveled) many miles."

Goo Goo Dolls hit the road with 'Something' new PDF Print E-mail

Goo Goo Dolls hit the road with 'Something' newLOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It's been almost 25 years since John Rzeznik and Robby Takac formed the Goo Goo Dolls. In that time, they've scored such hits as "Iris" -- which spent 17 weeks at No. 1 -- "Slide" and a cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit."

Their ninth studio album, "Something for the Rest of Us," will be released August 3 on Warner Bros. Records. And while the album is full of the hooky pop-rock that has sustained the band for decades, lead singer/guitarist Rzeznik's songwriting takes on a more somber, serious tone.

"I went through a period of time when I was working on the record, looking at where the record business is and everything, and just feeling sort of lost -- "What is my purpose?" I'm in my 40s, and the music business has become about instant pop stars, very disposable music. I thought, "Wow, what is going to happen to me when I don't have this job anymore? What am I going to do with myself all day?""

Trophy Wife is part of the emergent collective of musicians, artists and writers based in Oxford, England known as Blessing Force, whose acts - which include Jonquil, Neon Pulse, Pet Moon, Chad Valley, Fixers, Solid Gold Dragons, and Rhosyn - are following closely in the footsteps of local math rock band Foals. The band employs a system of electronic keyboards, drum patterns and plucked guitars, accompanied by delicate, softly sung vocals, to create an intelligent indie-electronica sound that is making welcome waves in the music world.

The line-up consists of Jody Prewett (vocals, guitar, and bass), Ben Rimmer (keyboards), and Kit Monteith (drums and percussion), who previously played together as a trio in a math rock band called Wait For Coniston. The band members also exercise control over all aspects of their artwork, photography, and videos.

"We are all descendants of Cornish sailors, and Jody has an encyclopedic knowledge of Welsh sporting statistics between the years 1991-1995," Trophy Wife told There Goes the Fear.

"We have been making music together for about 7 years in various different forms. Us meeting each other was a case of mistaken identity; Jody pretended to be a female drummer so he could get into Kit’s post-rock band," Trophy Wife revealed to There Goes the Fear. "We started recording dancey music late at night over a few drinks. Things grew and we set out to challenge ourselves and do something that was new to us."

Kit Monteith's drum kit is "the only one of its kind and Kit learned to play drums on it during his youth." Trophy Wife disclosed to TLOBF. "The drum set up... was built in the 1970's by a jazz musician."
