Featured Band (9): The Vaccines - Rock Fundamentalists PDF Print E-mail

Featured Band (9): The Vaccines - Rock Fundamentalists"I don't consider our songs to be growers that take ten listens to get into," Frontman Justin Young said. "People will either like us or they won't, it's that simple." The band is called The Vaccines. It's Jay Jay Pistolet and Freddie Cowan, younger brother of Tom from The Horrors. The Vaccines' tracks are short - similar to American Hardcore punk - but played in the style of good, old-fashioned Rock'n'Roll. In fact, the music's so retro, it's Pop. It's like listening to the Ramones, The Beach Boys, and The Shadows, all playing with the distorted guitars of The Jesus and Mary Chain.

This London band only played its first-ever show two months ago and just released its debut single, but will make its American debut headling Bowery Ballroom, New York on January 20 and then play Glasslands two days later. In October, the Vaccines played their first London concert. An audience of nearly three hundred included Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Marcus Mumford, members of White Lies and The Maccabees, and a few journalists. More than two hundred were locked outside, including some of the band's friends and Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs.

"On the strength of just a demo and a soon-to-be-released debut single, nearly 300 people have turned up for the Vaccines' first hometown gig [Flowerpot, London]; another 200 have had to be turned away," Betty Clarke reported in the Guardian.

Featured Band (8): Dubbed "Princes of Leon," Nashville-Based Mona Want To Be "Bigger Than Bono" PDF Print E-mail

Featured Band (8): Dubbed "Mona are Sun Studio’s Million Dollar Quartet (Presley, Perkins, Lewis, Cash) rebooted 54 years on," the band's Blog claims. "They’re rock revivalists, in the sense that they like, as Nick [Brown, Mona's founder and frontman] puts it, 'the golden age of the United States – the James Dean, Marilyn Monroe type stuff'.” Nashville-based Mona plays rock'n'roll "songs for the city folk" and its sound is a cross between the music of fellow Nashville band Kings of Leon and the American heartland rock of singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen.

This iconography and idealism, the Blog quotes Brown as saying, informed the writing of "Listen to Your Love" – and the reasons why it became the band's first single.

“It felt kinda reminiscent of some of the old stuff,” Brown said. “Even Roy Orbison-type melodies. But still, a little bit of a punk thing in there. It just felt like a good first introduction, a first impression.”

"They're old-fashioned... Boasting huge sounds and epic gestures, this bunch of 50s throwbacks are on a mission to be 'bigger than Bono,' Paul Lester reported in the Guardian. "You hear the line 'the major labels are going mad for them' a lot these days, but with Mona you can believe it."

Gorillaz Free Xmas Album Called The Fall PDF Print E-mail
Written by DJ Space

Gorillaz Free Xmas Album Called The FallDamon Albarn has revealed that the new Gorillaz album available as a "free" download* on Christmas Day will be called The Fall. Albarn revealed the title of the album during an interview with Sydney, Australia radio station Triple J.

The album was recorded in hotel rooms on Albarn’s iPad during the Gorillaz tour of the US in October. "I hope I'll be making the first record on an iPad," Albarn said in November.

The new record is named after the autumn season in which it was written. "I wrote it in October," he explained. "I didn't want to call it October because U2 had already used that. Although I like the word October, I like the month, I like the feeling."

Albarn will make a video of a track from The Fall available through an advent calendar on the band's website on Christmas Eve. On Christmas morning the entire album will be offered as a free download* – for one day only.

Albarn confirmed that Gorillaz is taking a break following the completion of its world tour which ends in New Zealand on December 21, in time for the festive holidays. "I'm putting [Gorillaz] back in a box for a while," he said. "Just putting it back on the shelf."

Any subsequent iPad Gorillaz album may be called Christmas Vacation.

March Discovers R.E.M.'s Collapse With Free DownloadR.E.M. is set to release its new album Collapse Into Now on March 7. The band has released the lead-track "Discoverer" as a free download from its official website. R.E.M. has further confirmed that the record will be available for iTunes pre-order on December 21. Listen to "Discoverer" here.

The release date of R.E.M.'s fifteenth studio album was reported by NME.

A feature on R.E.M and the making of the band's new album is also due to appear in the January edition of Q Magazine.

In the article, Peter Buck (guitar) and Mike Mills (bass and keyboards) talk about recording at the fabled Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, the band's time in New Orleans during the making of Collapse Into Now, how the album got its name, and about the guests who appear on the new record.

R.E.M. spent the summer in Hansa Studios, Berlin, where David Bowie recorded his landmark Heroes album in 1977 and U2 reinvented themselves with Achtung Baby.

“Great records were made there and I’m sure horrible records were made there, too,” Buck joked. “But you think about the good ones.”

Coldplay's Concept Album Follows Death And All His Friends PDF Print E-mail

Coldplay's Concept Album Follows Death And All His FriendsAfter ten years and four albums, Coldplay has confirmed it is finally on the verge of releasing its first "concept" album. Whereas Viva La Vida explored the grander sweeping themes of love and war, frontman Chris Martin said the new album will be more intimate by comparison.

"It's from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost," Martin said. "Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together."

Chris Martin and gutarist Jonny Buckland spoke to BBC News on Sunday.

"It's a concept album but it's supposed to be very personal within a big framework," Martin added. "Does that make sense?"

The record which is still untitled is being produced by Brian Eno and Marcus Dravs, who made the band's last album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.

(Reuters) - Canadian rock band Arcade Fire notched up their first UK number one album on Sunday when their latest release debuted at the top of the charts, the Official Charts Company said.

"The Suburbs," the band's first album for three years, went one better than their last release "Neon Bible" which reached number two.

It marks the follow-up to 2006's "Neon Bible" and their 2004 debut "Funeral," which each sold about half a million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Neon Bible" debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.

The band retains a tight grip on its destiny: it owns its own recording studio, master recordings and publishing rights; licenses those rights to different labels across the globe, territory by territory; refuses corporate sponsorships, private-party gigs and most commercial placements; and calls the shots for every major decision.
